FROM AUTOMATION TO EXECUTION: WHY AAB’S NEW COO SIGNALS A SHIFT IN PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

The role of the Chief Operating Officer is being quietly redefined — and AAB’s appointment of Jon Grainger shows just how far that shift has gone.
Across the professional services sector, operational leadership is no longer about oversight alone. It is increasingly about automation, data infrastructure and the ability to scale efficiently without compromising trust, compliance or client relationships.
AAB’s decision to appoint Grainger as Chief Operating Officer reflects that change. He will lead the firm’s technology, operations and integration teams, with a mandate to embed end-to-end automation capability across the business.
The move comes as firms across the UK and Ireland face mounting pressure to modernise — driven by cybersecurity threats, regulatory complexity and the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence. In this environment, operational strategy is becoming inseparable from technological capability.
Grainger brings experience in implementing automation at scale across complex organisations, delivering efficiency gains while maintaining strong governance. His approach is built on a principle that is gaining traction across the sector: technology should enhance human expertise, not replace it.
Emma Lancaster, Chief Executive at AAB, said: “As our business continues to grow, strengthening our operational capability is essential to delivering the highest levels of service for our clients. Jon’s leadership supports our Strategy to 2030, particularly our ambition to unlock operational efficiencies that free up more time for our teams to focus on deepening relationships with clients. His approach to responsible automation aligns perfectly with the AAB culture – technology should support our people.”
The appointment follows AAB’s 2025 investment from Goldman Sachs Alternatives, which has accelerated the firm’s expansion and strengthened its focus on technology-led transformation.
At the same time, the expectations placed on firms are intensifying. Cybersecurity resilience, regulatory compliance and responsible AI deployment are no longer optional — they are core to maintaining credibility in a highly scrutinised market.
Grainger’s remit will be to build operational systems that are not only efficient, but secure and scalable, positioning AAB to compete in a sector where execution is increasingly defined by technological sophistication.
As part of the transition, Derek Mitchell will move into a strategic role leading integration initiatives and major group projects, ensuring continuity as the firm advances its long-term roadmap.
Speaking about his appointment, Jon Grainger said: “I’m delighted to be joining AAB at such an exciting stage in its growth. There is enormous potential in harnessing automation to create smarter, more agile operations – provided we do so responsibly and with people firmly at the centre. I look forward to working with our teams to build scalable, secure and efficient processes that enhance both our client service and the working experience of our colleagues.”
The significance of the appointment extends beyond a single firm. It reflects a wider shift across professional services, where the ability to integrate technology into core operations is becoming a defining factor in long-term competitiveness.
