HEALTH TECH ENTERPRISE LAUNCHES HIGH-INTENSITY SPRINTS TO FAST-TRACK NHS INNOVATION

A new series of high-intensity innovation programmes is set to bring together NHS professionals, MedTech entrepreneurs and industry specialists in a coordinated effort to accelerate solutions to some of the UK healthcare system’s most pressing challenges.
Health Tech Enterprise, which supports the commercialisation of medical technologies, has opened applications for its Health Innovation Sprints, with events scheduled in London and Cambridge later this year.
The initiative reflects mounting pressure within the NHS to translate early-stage innovation into deployable healthcare solutions, as the system faces sustained demand, workforce shortages and the need to shift towards more preventative and community-based care models.
The first sprint will take place on 11 May 2026 at Kilburn & Strode LLP in London, followed by a second event on 2 June at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, with a specific focus on paediatrics and child health.
At the centre of the programme is a one-day intensive format designed to bridge the gap between clinical insight and commercial execution. Participants—described as “clinical entrepreneurs”—will work in multidisciplinary teams alongside experts in product development, regulation, intellectual property, health economics and investment.
Following keynote sessions and short pitches, teams will collaborate to develop practical, execution-ready roadmaps aligned with NHS priorities, including digital transformation, prevention and the transition from hospital-based care to community settings.
Dr Anne Blackwood, Chief Executive for Health Tech Enterprise, said, “Our Health Innovation Sprints are designed to break down barriers between ideas and implementation. By bringing NHS innovators together with commercial, technical and regulatory expertise in one room, we can accelerate the development of solutions that directly address real-world challenges in healthcare. We’re particularly keen to hear from both idea owners and experienced advisors who want to play a hands-on role in shaping the next generation of health technologies.”
Applicants are typically expected to have reached Technology Readiness Level 3 (TRL3) or above, ensuring concepts have moved beyond early-stage ideation. By the end of each sprint, teams are required to produce a structured business case covering regulatory pathways, commercialisation strategy and product development milestones.
Projects will then be presented to a judging panel, with awards recognising the most commercially viable and clinically impactful solutions developed during the programme.
A key incentive is the Innovation Voucher, sponsored by eg technology, which provides the winning team with dedicated engineering support. This includes ideation workshops, concept development, prototype reviews and the creation of detailed product or user requirement specifications—critical steps in advancing solutions towards market readiness.
The programme also reflects a broader shift towards collaborative innovation models within the UK health technology ecosystem. Previous sprints have led to partnerships between clinicians and SMEs, as well as successful funding outcomes supported by organisations including the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and NHS charities.
Jonathan Morrall for Kilburn & Strode LLP added, “We are really excited to partner with Health Tech Enterprise on this Health Innovation Sprint event. Medtech is a core area for us, and our Medtech group is delighted to be supporting NHS innovators tackle real-world challenges in healthcare. The group of assembled experts including members of our specialist Medtech team will provide an excellent opportunity for the innovators to develop their solutions.”
As the NHS continues to prioritise innovation-led transformation, programmes such as these are increasingly positioned as critical infrastructure—helping convert frontline insight into scalable, investable healthcare solutions.
