URBAN PUBS & BARS SWEEPS TOP HONOURS AT THE PUBLICAN AWARDS

Urban Pubs & Bars has reinforced its position at the top of London’s hospitality sector after securing two of the industry’s most sought-after accolades at The Publican Awards, underlining the group’s sustained growth and operational consistency in a challenging trading environment.

The London-based operator was named Best Pub Company (over 51 sites), the ceremony’s highest distinction, alongside winning Best Food Offer—an endorsement of both its scale and its increasingly central focus on premium dining within the pub format.

Held at Evolution London and attended by more than 1,500 industry professionals, The Publican Awards are widely regarded as the sector’s most rigorous benchmark, with entrants subject to a detailed assessment of financial performance, operational standards and customer experience.

For Urban Pubs & Bars, the double win signals more than recognition of recent performance. It reflects a broader shift in the UK pub market, where operators are increasingly differentiating through food quality, venue design and neighbourhood positioning, rather than relying solely on traditional wet-led sales.

Chris Hill, Managing Director of Urban Pubs & Bars, said the awards highlighted the depth of execution across the business.

“To be recognised with both Best Food Offer and Best Pub Co is an incredible achievement for our team and I thank them all. These awards are a testament to the passion, consistency and hard work across our entire business, from kitchen to front of house.”

The group’s expansion strategy—combining acquisitions with targeted investment in existing sites—has enabled it to build one of the capital’s largest independent pub estates. Backed by Davidson Kempner and Global Mutual, the company has focused on developing premium, community-led venues that align with changing consumer expectations around quality and experience.

Industry analysts note that operators able to balance scale with local relevance have outperformed in recent years, particularly as cost pressures—from labour to energy—have reshaped margins across the sector. Urban Pubs & Bars’ emphasis on food-led growth has also positioned it to capture higher-spending customers in an increasingly competitive hospitality landscape.

Founded by Malc Heap and Nick Pring, the business has pursued a long-term investment approach in London’s pub and bar market, targeting sites that can deliver both strong returns and a distinctive neighbourhood identity.

The latest awards come amid a period of consolidation across the UK pub industry, with larger groups strengthening their portfolios while smaller operators face mounting cost challenges. Against this backdrop, Urban Pubs & Bars’ ability to deliver consistent performance across a growing estate has set it apart.

Its recognition at The Publican Awards not only underscores its operational strength but also highlights the evolving role of the modern pub—one that blends food, drink and social experience into a more sophisticated, destination-led offering.
