LONDON GATWICK EMBEDS SUSTAINABILITY SKILLS IN FIRST YEAR WITH ISEP

London Gatwick has marked its first year as a Corporate Partner of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP), embedding sustainability skills across its workforce and rolling out initiatives designed to deliver measurable environmental impact.

Since joining ISEP in 2024, more than 75 Gatwick colleagues have completed ISEP-accredited Environmental Sustainability Skills workshops, with a further 200 scheduled to undergo training in 2025. The training is part of a broader strategy to ensure sustainability considerations are factored into everyday decision-making across the airport.

Practical progress is already visible. Gatwick has transitioned its airside vehicle fleet from diesel to hydrotreated vegetable oil fuel and electric vehicles, while pioneering a sector-leading “net gain” approach to biodiversity and habitats on-site. These actions contribute to the airport’s goal of achieving net zero for its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Earlier this year, Gatwick hosted its first operational sustainability conference, attended by 150 frontline and operational colleagues and headlined by Martin Baxter, Deputy CEO of ISEP. The event formed part of a wider sustainability roadshow designed to connect corporate goals with daily activity.

To encourage innovation from within, the airport also launched its inaugural internal sustainability awards, attracting more than 50 entries. Sarah Mukherjee MBE, CEO of ISEP, joined as guest judge. Twelve employees have since become affiliate members of ISEP, with many now working towards associate-level qualifications to gain professional recognition for their expertise.

Mark Edwards, Head of Sustainability at London Gatwick, said: “I’m really proud that London Gatwick is the first airport partner of ISEP. Our partnership is helping us deliver our sustainability goals, including the ambitious goal of being net zero in our scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030. By embedding accredited training across our airport and recognising the contributions of colleagues at every level, we’re building the skills and culture needed to deliver meaningful change, integrating sustainability into everyday decision-making across London Gatwick.”

Martin Baxter, Deputy CEO at ISEP, added: “London Gatwick’s commitment to embedding sustainability across its operations is exactly the kind of leadership we need. By equipping teams at every level with the skills and confidence to act, they are setting a powerful example of how professional development can drive meaningful environmental change. It’s been good to support their journey so far, and we’re excited to continue this partnership into its next phase towards a sustainable future.”

The airport’s partnership with ISEP will continue into 2026, with an emphasis on further training, recognition of sustainability leaders across all roles, and alignment of operations with its long-term environmental targets.
